Music Everyday

It is for
shaking your ass
in time with others
being your personal soundtrack
drowning out the offensive
making the intolerable tolerable
connecting with people
donations
wealth
giving voice to aggression
making the sweet love
making the unsweet love
drowning out the sounds we make
transforming the moment
transforming yourself
Imposing your tastes on others.
etc. etc. etc.

These are all pretty vague categories which can be applied to many of the situations in which music is commonly used. The instances in which music use has most recently impressed me were related to three situations.

I spoke to bass player who was amazed by the breadth of musical knowledge possessed by younger musicians. These teenagers, benefiting from an abundance of leisure hours and the vast resources of the internet, were naming off dozens of obscure bands from three and four decades ago. This made me think about past bands, and musical styles, I had dismissed before, and would likely not revisit now. My own tastes are somewhat figured out, and though I am open to many forms of music, but they are rooted in a sharing system based on mix-tapes. Inherently limited to people I would have some form of physical contact with. Here is a generation with unparalleled access to the history of music, and their dominant limitation hinges on their curiosity. What does all this access mean in the long term? Is there a potential for information overload? Does taste necessitate refinement? Asking the question of what kind of music one likes, will the answer forever be, “Everything”?

I saw the Glenn Branca Ensemble play last Friday and noticed a lot of older fans in the audience. Some, it seems, had come out for the first time in a long time, and some of their guests were not prepared for what they had been dragged to. Lately I have tried to constrain myself by not allowing nostalgia to drive my projects or my activities, but admittedly, I wanted to reconnect with the last time I saw them a few years ago. Then, the music had begun like a sloppy rehearsal, Branca restarting and adjusting musicians already in progress, with no clear beginning that transformed into a driving 45 minute assault. This time he conducted instead of playing his double-body guitar, and seemed merely drunk. His back turned to the audience and his gestures sporadic, pained and wild. I felt his movements were just one element in a giant trance-inducing spectacle. The stage became a focal point of my experience. I felt my role as witness/spectator was cemented by the presence of the raised stage and the lighting, and as a witness I felt myself less a participant.

Twice this week I noticed panhandlers shaking their change cups in a rhythmic sequence, I have observed this. I first assumed their behavior resulted in the highest revenue, compared with the annoyance many people feel at the request of charity. Then I thought that perhaps there was a law against panhandling, and this was a loophole in the law, since no verbal request for money was ever made. But as with many tasks people perform for extended periods of time, I thought their might be something more to this. Firstly, the panhandler is keeping time, and introducing that time signature to his environment. From that simple beat there might be a chance of a reciprocal bond between the panhandler and the listener. It is music in a highly basic form, and likely closer tied to music in its infancy.

From these experiences I wondered about the future of traditional forms of music. Over time, what does globalization mean for music throughout the world and are we witness to the last times in which recordings captured music that was not informed by all music.

BeezNutz

The Hive

The Hive

BeezNutz is a creation of J. Johnson and A. Nevarez.

BeezNutz is a colony of creatures that lay claim to a space by warding off intruders.  They learn to predict the duration and severity of their response based on experience.

The Colony

The Colony

All communicate wirelessly through the use of XBee 802.15.4 radio modules.  Unlike the lagging communication systems employed by eusocial animals (Honeybee Waggle Dance, and Ant Pheromone Transfer), Beeznutz are instantly aware of the threat level to any and all in the colony.

Scout with Arduino

Scout with Arduino

Scouts have developed an ocellus; a PIR (Passive Infrared Sensor) that takes an IR snapshot upon powerup.  Sensing a change in their environment, such as the warm presense of a mammal, they signal an alert to the hive.

Drone

Drone

Drones possess a modified ovipositor in the form of an ultrasonic rangefinder to communicate whether a threat is advancing or retreating.

Underbelly

Underbelly

BeezNutz are 3D printed and designed to construct camoflage out of their surroundings.  In the wild they may be covered in leaves or moss, while their urban equivalents would clad themselves in soda cans and potato chip bags.  Their underbelly is comprised of snappable horizontal slats to provide a platform for mounting modular components as needed.

The Hive also possesses an ultrasonic rangefinder in its ovipositor, and combines all sensing from drones and scouts to provide an instantaneous perception of threat to all the colony.

Espionage SMS-WiznetWeb

The simplest path to achieve this chain would be a script that would parse the body of an SMS sent to a mobile phone, add my contribution, and upload it via wiznet to a webpage. I have no idea how to parse SMS from a phone, but I realized SMS could be sent to an email address, and decided to proceed from there.

Working with Zach Taylor, we came up with a PHP script that could pull the body of a message from an email, add our word and upload it via the wiznet onto a web page.

currently two versions of the web page exists, one in which new messages are added to every message ever sent to the page, and another which resets the page every time it is refreshed.  In future iterations, I would like if I could get the latest message to remain on the page until a new message replaces it.

Lentil Blizzard

The initial idea was to use the lentils as a crude textured surface on which to apply an equally crude chroma-keying effect through the swirling of lentils.

frame differencing allowed me to explore the variations capable when manipulating video with virtually identical 3D monochromatic pixels.  the ability to reset the mask makes this reasonably engaging. ((better picture needed here))

The structure is comprised of a Unibrain Fire-I camera mounted with it’s lens facing upwards.  I added a small slit to the lens hole of the dome, to allow the camera to snap on and off, while still allowing for dis/re-assembly.

I needed to construct a platform that would allow light to illuminate the lentils from below, leaving the surface of the interface for engaging with directly.  In keeping with my obsession with reuse, this was constructed from take-out food containers.

I wanted to continue my obsession with manipulating video that promotes viewer stillness.

I employed a processing sketch that lowered the opacity of the proceeding image based on how much it had changed from the preceding image.  More change/movement would result in a blurring of images.

The overall project needs a lot of work, but I like this start so far, and the orange of the lentils stands out well against the blue produced by the fire-I’s estimation of white.

Monochromatic Woman

Marco and I worked together to assemble this vertical scroll of a story that combines artwork from different Mexican comic books. I love the use of the original single-color ink and pulp texture to further express the distance between the Monochromatic Woman and the colorful world she navigates

MirrorGirl StoryBoards

Though we managed to agree on the basic idea of a character who reflects back only the world presented to her, the details of that character remained fluid throughout the process. At some points we had thought of her in a comedic and bitchy light, and others in a sad and tortured existence. In these storyboards you can see that some incarnations of the mirrored face seemed flat-surfaced or only slightly bowed. This was intended to allow for visual effects that would distort the reflections of onlookers.

The final product did not follow the storyboards very closely, though the central conflict was communicated in ways I believe to be much closer to the original intention.

Jeehyun did a fantastic job drawing these. Well, you’ll see.

Mirror_Girl

I guess we are calling this MirrorGirl, even though as a working title, none of us seemed too keen on it. Which is why nicknames are dangerous.

Common_Cold

This is a short made in 30 minutes by Filippo, Alex and Myself.  We used an Xacti camera.  I have never tried making anything with this short a time constraint, but I think this came out pretty good, considering.  We only had time to run through it once in order to upload it for viewing in the 30 minutes allotted.
I sure have difficulty with things that don’t partially work. Perhaps this is why the virtual world annoys me far more than the mechanical world. And why I can’t figure out how to get video to embed into these annoying blogs!
